A client of mine recently became the proud new owner of another dance studio. She asked me to create a logo. She's fond of silhouettes and wanted to use the silhouette of the previous owner.

Banner for Select Dance

Because the Executive Director of Select Dance Academy & Performing Arts Center has been incredibly gracious to me, I thought I would try to create a new banner for her studio webpage...just for fun.

I sent it last night and it was well received!

Take Five!

Here is the latest t-shirt design I was hired to do.  The concept was inspired by the iconic song "Take Five" written by Paul Desmond and originally recorded by The Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1959. According to Wikipedia it sets its self apart from other jazz numbers because it is written in a 5/4 time signature. I find things like that interesting. ("Money" by Pink Floyd is another song that possess a rare time signature: 7/4)

I also learned that the songwriter left the royalities that the song still earns to the American Red Cross in his will.  (It earns about $100,000 a year.) That's remarkable to me.

The shirt is for the Select Dance Academy and Performing Art Center's 5 year anniversary. I am thankful to them for the opportunity to make this design. While putting this together, I had a fun time listening to Jaymay, Dr.Dog, and the one and only Justin Bieber--Oh, I'm not afraid to admit it. I've got Bieber Fever for sure!

Select Dance Academy | 2011 Recital

My latest project was to design a t-shirt for the Select Dance Academy 's upcoming spring recital. The shirts will be worn by students that participate in the show. It was decided that the shirts would be hot pink with neon green and black accents. Here are the designs that were offered to the Performing Arts Center.

I would actually wear this on a t-shirt. Of course that would mean that I would have to either perform in a recital or choreography something in this recital...which, let's face it, will NEVER happen. ;)

Did Olivia Newton John wear this in the "Physical" music video? She could have. This should be made into a sweat shirt that has the collar torn off and is stretched over one shoulder. OOH! Or it could be a vintage Barbie sweat shirt! Do they make screen prints that small?

 

     

 

I know I designed this, but the design with the giant oval is far too mature for what the client was looking for. I completely agree. You could even say this design could be on the verge of being adult.

Presenting Select Dance Academy & Performing Arts Center Logo

This past month I was asked to design a new logo for Select Dance Academy & Performing Arts Center located in Shakopee, Minnesota. The ribbon border is meant to represent fluidity and freedom. We chose to use a silhouette of a jazz dancer posing in an arabesque as supposed to a ballerina which is probably more cliche. That flexible model is the talented and soon to be Dr. Katie Phillips.
