5th Annual Festival 5.1K | 2012

This is the 5th year that I have teamed up with the Festival 5.1K to create some signage for the race. Truth be told, I have only ran this once. 

I will also openly admit that I was the 2nd to last to cross the finish line.

I have since given up the dream of being the next Kara Goucher after feeling like Nancy Kerrigan after she encountered Tonya Harding's bat swinging goon.

But I had a fun time designing this and the route is really scenic.

Before & After

Dear Reader,

IceBoxCards is no stranger to LaPine Design. There have been posts a plenty about the greeting cards that my father has drawn.

He works on a mail route. When people on his route would give him a gift for Christmas, he would draw them a personal thank you card...even if it took him until April to draw and deliver them all.

After many cards were given out, we finally started scanning them before he gave them to the generous patrons.  Here's what they look like after being scanned.

Then they fall into my obsessive-compulsive-skeletal hands. I get rid of the smudges and straighten everything up so that they will look sharp when we have them printed. This particular card took me 1 million years to finish. It was also originally drawn on a card with beveled edges. That posed a problem, but I believe it was eventually conquered. It should be noted, when I close my eyes I see this in negative on the back of my eyelids.

This landscape features Farnuk of the Far North fly fishing in the freezing waters beneath Seven Bridges Road in Duluth, MN. You can click on it to purchase it or one of the other 15 designs that were scanned before they were handed out to a someone special on my dad's mail route.

The 29th Annual Park Point Rummage Sale

I hardly slept a wink last night. I was so worried that all the bargains would be snatched up before I hit the pavement and began to rummage through those garages of Duluth's Park Point. Even though I didn't make it to my first sale until after three, I am still pleased with my findings. I have to thank the talented Amanda Weis, who will play the Baker's Wife in our upcoming production of "Into the Woods". If it wasn't for her, I would have missed them all together! So thanks, Amanda!
Here are a few of my finds:

Vintage screw-back sequin earrings. I'd like to know what era they are from. My guess is that they are older than the 1950's.

SCORE! Have I mentioned I love this film...and the soundtrack..and these stories? I really need to do a post on my obsession with this film. It's long over-due.

Yep! I'm gonna be having a Murder Mystery Party! Be looking for your invitation in the mail.  I have a feeling I'm going to have a difficult time trying to get people to attend this one though. It's an archaeological theme which kills two birds with one stone for me.

I loved this glass bead necklace. It's really long too and could/will double as bracelet.

Some have called this piece of sheet music my greatest garage sale find. When was the last time you listened to this song? Just try not to cry, I dare you.

Ah, somethings you just can't pass up...

"It's for the kids!" Actually, I got this for James. His response, "Uh, Money can't buy you friendship, Jena." (This is not a typo. He's never pronounced my name correctly.)

Then from the same garage where I found my phonograph cylinder last year, I found this No. 2 Brownie Box Camera for $1. It's from 1904. That happens to be the year that "Meet Me In St. Louis" takes place. I love that movie and know that this will make a great edition to my bookshelf. It's so interesting. The people at this sale were so friendly to me as well and remembered me when I revisited their sale later on in the day.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this bucket quite yet,...that is after I clean the worm guts out of it. Any suggestions as to how I could use it creatively?

Then, as I was walking back to my car, I noticed this was free. It has a new home now.
 

It could be the companion to Martin Crane's infamous recliner.
 
But I believe I've just found my next "before & after" project, which should be fun, because this will be my first ottoman!

Spying Spines

 I caught this out of the corner of my eye on my way to rehearsal yesterday and may or may not have run a red light in the process.

At the base of The Duluth Public Library, there is a new mural being painted. The building itself is extremely creative in structure. It's modelled after the iron ore ships that are frequently in our harbour, but I've often thought it is coldly out of place beside such historical buildings like City Hall and The Depot. This mural appears warm and inviting and somewhat lends to the ambiance of the building now.

I'm glad I was able to catch the mural before it was complete. And before it becomes defaced by whipper-snappers who "waz here".

You really can't tell what books are displayed while driving, so I had to go back for a closer peek and a true walk about.

Excited to see a Dr. Seuss and E.B White represented. But they are all quite beautiful, aren't they?

It would have been fun to vote on which books to include, but I'm just really excited to see something like this downtown.  Duluth is certainly becoming a lovely place.

What books do you think should have been painted?

Oh! And I'm kind of crazy about the call numbers at the bottom and all the diverse fonts.
