So here's a concept that I'm trying to develop. I have a tendency to make very linear logos. After the initial sketch of this, I'm leaning towards a more vertical rectangle.

Although, I'm not quite sure how that would look. I like the inspiration of the bag from The Blue Heron Trading Co.

And I really like the frame around it. I don't know. I'm not crazy about my fonts either.

I just thought I'd show you the work in progress.

Here's the Far North Book Club design that I modified earlier this year.

Hunting for Doors

My friend, Makayla and I spent last Friday afternoon hunting for doors. We rummaged through flea market like shops and yard sales looking for a door that could someday embellish a door frame at Makayla's place.  I was easily distracted by everything because I find character in junk from another era. Why is this?  I must have what certain characters in Midnight in Paris have. Oh, to experience life in another era.

Here are a few snapshots that I took while Makayla diligently browsed through a warehouse of doors.

This door is stylish, isn't it! It feels rather art deco.

 

I have a few of these and know severaly people that collect them. It would appear that many people do. Why is that?

They are a staple at every garage sale. Why do we collect them?

I thought it might be fun sometime to go around town taking pictures of cool attic windows. I love this one. They are only on the really old houses and they are all so unique. Can't you just see the March girls from Little Woman peering out from their attic window saying, "What do you think of the captive?"

Is it just me, or can you see the letter "D" too?

I took this picture for two reasons: 1. I have a good friend with the last name Phillips. And 2. This company originated in 1912 which reminds me of Titanic.

I like diamond patterns.

I almost bought one of these babies at a rummage sale last month.  It would have been a major splurge. Someday.

We stopped a really great bookshop with book from the floor to the ceiling. I'm not exaggerating. It was amazing. These two volumes caught my eye so I snapped a picture. Moments later Makayla pointed out the same binding to me. We had a good laugh about it.

I took this picture for my dad. I picked up a 2 record album that  I have been searching for at this rummage sale, only to discover once I got home that record 2 was missing. The next day I was driving with my dad and I saw that the sale was still going on. So we pulled over to search for it. My dad saw this little mail box and thought it was so cool. Little did he know I took a picture of it for him the day before. (If you were wondering, they didn't have Record 2 anymore...so I'm going to have to buy Electric Light Orchestra's Out of the Blue AGAIN!) 

Blurry...too bad.

A trip to Two Harbors is not complete without a stop at Betty's Pies. We entered through the exit door because I thought I saw Robert Redford in the parking lot and clearly ignored the brightly coloured exit signs. I swear that was the enterance last time I was there! Makayla had a Butterfinger something or other pie and I had the Great Lakes pie (strawberries, rhubarb, blackberries, raspberries, & blueberries) which was more than delicious! We found all the wrong doors during this hunt, but someday, hopefully the right one will be just around the corner and visibly marked.

Spying Spines

 I caught this out of the corner of my eye on my way to rehearsal yesterday and may or may not have run a red light in the process.

At the base of The Duluth Public Library, there is a new mural being painted. The building itself is extremely creative in structure. It's modelled after the iron ore ships that are frequently in our harbour, but I've often thought it is coldly out of place beside such historical buildings like City Hall and The Depot. This mural appears warm and inviting and somewhat lends to the ambiance of the building now.

I'm glad I was able to catch the mural before it was complete. And before it becomes defaced by whipper-snappers who "waz here".

You really can't tell what books are displayed while driving, so I had to go back for a closer peek and a true walk about.

Excited to see a Dr. Seuss and E.B White represented. But they are all quite beautiful, aren't they?

It would have been fun to vote on which books to include, but I'm just really excited to see something like this downtown.  Duluth is certainly becoming a lovely place.

What books do you think should have been painted?

Oh! And I'm kind of crazy about the call numbers at the bottom and all the diverse fonts.

So I judge books by their cover...

Sue me.

There are few that have pretty, elegant covers, but have been absolutely terrible. CoughSense&Sensibility&SeaMonstersCough.

But for the most part, I like finding old editions of books I love.  Even if I already own a copy. It's nice to have a spare to lend to someone.
I always feel like Mel Gibson in "Conspiracy Theory" when I can't pass a copy of F.Scott Fitzgerald's "This Side of Paradise" or any Sherlock Holmes Collection. Each copy has its own personality for me.

I want these. I don't need them, but I WANT them. I only have one out of this collection designed by Coraline Bickford-Smith and I had to order it online. (The Hound of the Baskervilles By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)There are only two other editions that I have actually held and for some idiotic reason, I did not snatch them up.

Especially when one was Jane Eyre and my only copy is abridged...which I'm not going to bother reading. So as you can tell, I'm still stewing over that.

Ms. Bickford-Smith is pretty amazing in my opinion. . She's also designed a set of F. Scott Fitzgerald covers that I gush over and have been searching for in every bookstore I've stood in since my eyes beheld their art deco design.

Maybe this love of covers, stems from a love of bookshelves. Oh, and I just love when people colour coordinate. Like these:

That's definitely very Type-A of me. But it creates another work of art. Don't you agree?

These three books were recent finds at the Annual Friends of the Library Book Sale. They were quite eye-catching.

The set shelves in my room is quickly overflowing. That always tends to happen after our local library book sale. I need to de-clutter it a bit so the bowing shelves do not break under pressure. Oh, but there are so many things from around the world that friends have given me or I have been fortunate enough to acquire in person that only hold sentimental value to me and would probably be worthless to anyone else. It's difficult for me to see that shelf and not feel bombarded with good memories.
